People who visit Tambopata, in Peru’s Madre de Dios region, love nature. The rain, heat, biting insects and considerable distances are endured, for a precious short while, in order to be part of one of the most wildlife-rich places on earth. The team at award-winning nature tourism operator Rainforest Expeditions know this, and also know that responsible nature travel is their game.
For this reason, the Rainforest’s Expeditions lodges are built from locally sourced materials, have energy and water efficiency systems, and support a long term collaboration with the Ese-eja community of Infierno. But international travel, accommodation, and services linked to nature tourism, no matter how well they are managed, generate carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to climate change, one of the largest threats to rainforests and the millions of species that inhabit them.
We have known the Rainforest Expeditions team for many years, and have seen their company grow through their dedication to authentic travel experiences and wildlife conservation. This is why we are very happy to welcome them as a new partner of Regenera, making Posada Amazonas, Refugio Amazonas, and Tambopata Research Center the first carbon neutral lodge operations in the Tambopata National Reserve. Through Regenera, they take a new step to support rainforest conservation and the climate stability of our planet for future generations of visitors and Peruvians.
Visitors discover the forest with a Rainforest Expeditions guide.
Regenera is an innovative footprint management service that measures your carbon footprint, offsets it through local carbon sequestration and avoided deforestation actions, and transfers 60% of revenues to local communities who have agreed to protect forests. The carbon neutral agreement with Rainforest Expeditions covers 100% of the emissions of the day-to-day operations of their lodges, their offices in Puerto Maldonado, as well as transport of all fixed staff, since the beginning of 2016.
Rainforest Expeditions and Nature Services Peru, the B-certified social enterprise behind Regenera, will now explore how to make visiting Rainforest Expedition’s lodges a carbon neutral experience for all those travellers who would like to compensate their travel emissions, and thereby support conservation actions in Tambopata. As nature lovers, we know we only have one Planet. Every action we take has an impact. We have to work together more and more to regenerate it.
