Amarakaeri Communal Reserve Environmental Credit Program

Picture
In March 2011, Nature Services Peru will began to work with the indigenous Administration Contract Executor (ECA) of the Amarakaeri Communal Reserve. The Reserve is currently under threat by illegal alluvial gold mining and logging activities and a proposed road from the village of Itahuania to the mining town of Choque. The program has three specific objectives:
1 - Strengthen the co-management and operations of the Reserve by the ECA.
2 - Enable better communication, participation and governance of the Reserve by member communities of the ECA, and
3 - Developing an ecosystem services framework for  the development and sale of environmental credits to support the future  stewardship of the Reserve.

The work, in coordination with capacity building and land use planning activities led by SePeru,  is being supported by grants from the Acuerdo para la Conservacion de Bosques Tropicales (ACBT) and the Fondo de las Americas (FONDAM).
